about

"Unnatural Currents" is Pretend Friend's second full-length LP. This album is the first to be acoustically arranged and foreshadows Pretend Friend's stylistic direction since Brody Wellman and Evan Ogborn have joined the ranks as upright bassist and mandolinist, respectively.

This writing of this album acknowledges the futility in pursuing supernatural absolutes, but it also validates respect of the unknown. It relishes the uncertainty of existence, spirituality, and morality, and it celebrates expressions of enthusiasm, infatuation and skepticism.

God I am so tired
So tired of being weak
I have neither strength to stand nor discipline to sleep
I question my labor when I strain my back in vain
And I realize that the future and what I think just ain't the same

Ah ah ah
Ah ah ah ah
Ah ah ah
Ah ah ah

Lord who would really blame me if I smoke my life away
I handle monotony by lengthening my days

Ah ah ah

A skeptic of intention
For who is there to trust
Even nature soon would carry all of us back to the dust
Sure I know my neighbor
Man at least I know his name
And with all these busy schedules being a friend just ain't the same

Ah ah ah

Lord who would really blame me if I smoke my life away
I handle monotony by lengthening my days

Well they tell me if work gets slow I'll be the first to go
Some days I get worried man
Some days I hope so

Track Name: Moving Pictures
Oh it's the law of nature baby
Can't you see
I got what I need and it sure ain't free
Well I spend my days counting time
Waiting on comfort to arrive

You know some believe we're a moving picture
Others say we're fulfilling scripture
Oh no

I believe in a destination
But I believe in long vacation

Oh well Jesus was a carpenter
He knew the hammer and nail
That's for sure
So that's my religion man
I can relate to working long hours on a summer's day

You know some believe we're a moving picture
Others say we're fulfilling scripture
Oh no

I believe in a destination
But I believe in long vacation

Hold yourself upright
Be the natural state of your bones
Work until your back is strong enough to stand alone
Baby don't you stay and wait on the ringing of the phone
Don't you fear wisdom is both your friend and foe
Oh God I don't want to know

Well when I feel the weight of eternity
I practice better empathy
And when loneliness is killing me
I pay better attention to my company

You know some believe we're a moving picture
Others say we're fulfilling scripture
Oh no

I believe in a destination
But I believe in long vacation

Hold yourself upright
Be the natural state of your bones
Work until your back is strong enough to stand alone
Baby don't stay and wait on the ringing of the phone
Don't you fear wisdom is both your friend and foe
Oh God I don't want to know

You know some believe we're a moving picture
Others say we're fulfilling scripture
Oh no

I believe in a destination
But I believe in long vacation

Hold yourself upright
Be the natural state of your bones
Work until your back is strong enough to stand alone
Baby don't stay and wait on the ringing of the phone
Don't you fear wisdom is both your friend and foe
Oh God I don't want to know
Track Name: Waste My Time
Lord I believe in two things
Freedom to stay
Freedom to leave
Uncertainty ain't my disease
I got what I want
I got what you need

She's my dark side
My selfish greed
A spider weaving web through my dreams
I took the shots
I paid the fee
I took the recommended dose
Now I chase the breeze

Hey hey momma don't waste my time
I gotta keep moving while the sun still shines
Keep shaking me down
Shaking me down
Shaking me down
Shaking me down
Still I stay but I'm holding my breath
This woman I love scares me to death
She's hanging a lead weight from my neck
Hanging a lead weight from my neck

Fuel my fire
Ignite my hate
I had a chance to leave
And I took it too late
She takes my money
Takes my house
Takes everything
Now I'm gonna drive before she takes my keys

Hey hey momma don't waste my time
I gotta keep moving while the sun still shines
Keep shaking me down
Shaking me down
Shaking me down
Shaking me down
Still I stay but I'm holding my breath
This woman I love scares me to death
She's hanging a lead weight from my neck
Hanging a lead weight from my neck

She say come on to me
Come on to me
Come on to me
Come on to me
Come on to me
Come on to me
Come on to me
Come on to me

I gotta leave
I gotta leave
I gotta leave
I gotta leave
I gotta leave
I gotta leave
I gotta leave
I gotta leave

Hey hey momma don't waste my time
I gotta keep moving while the sun still shines
Keep shaking me down
Shaking me down
Shaking me down
Shaking me down
Still I stay but I'm holding my breath
This woman I love scares me to death
She's hanging a lead weight from my neck
Hanging a lead weight from my neck

She say won't you go
Oh come on
Baby come on
Come on
Come on
Won't you go
Track Name: All My Working Hours
Lord every day's got me feeling like a steamrolling train
I pushed up this mountain before
So I'll do it again
And it seems I've run out of rail now
I believe it's the end of the track
And I'm tied to this engine behind me
So I'll have to go back

Oh Allie ain't I so full of selfish greed
I never took your picture
But I wished time would freeze
And I know the world ain't all two colors
But you got me still here green and blue
And I never was much of a fool
But I was a fool for you

Well the first night I was certain
By the second I sold my soul
And I can't help but thinking
About things like growing old
Oh it may be such a long time
Heartache wrestles with my good sense
I'll spend all my working hours to see you again
I'll spend all my working hours to see you again

Jesus I've been learning that I sure don't deserve what I ask
And if not for the love of a woman
Devils would still hold me fast
But I'm tired now
I'm still haunted by all things that I've done just to win
I've been captivated by angels
Lord I've been weighed down by sin

Well the first night I was certain
By the second lord I sold my soul
And I can't help but thinking
About things like growing old
Oh it may be such a long time
Heartache wrestles with my good sense
I'll spend all my working hours to see you again
I'll spend all my working hours to see you again

Well the first night I was certain
By the second lord I sold my soul
And I can't help but thinking
About me and you growing old
Oh it may be such a long time
Heartache wrestles with my good sense
I'll spend all my working hours to see you again
I'll spend all my working hours to see you again
I'll spend all my working hours to see you again
Track Name: Whiskey
I ran from the law
I'll pack my things and leave tomorrow
I got a couple ornery horses
They're gonna get me to Chicago
Lord there's whiskey in my bottle
I've been rolling in the mud
And I answer to nobody but God

Well I met a bad girl
She kept me hanging on tomorrow
Lord I died in her arms every night
Now all I know is sorrow
I said baby unload your gun
I see my welcome has expired
The good die young and the fast live to retire

Live or die I'm to blame
Live or die I'm worth the same
Oh hey hey baby call my name
I know you don't let yourself feel no pain

Lord I keep my hands out of bad men's pockets
And I keep my heart from leading me astray
See I don't wanna swing from a tree
I don't wanna burn up in a fire
I just want my lungs full of desire

Live or die I'm to blame
Live or die I'm worth the same
Oh hey hey baby call my name
I know you don't let yourself feel no pain

Well I ran from the law
I'll pack my things and leave tomorrow
I still got these same old horses
They got me to Chicago
There's still whiskey in my bottle
I'm still rolling in the mud
And I answer to nobody but God

Live or die I'm to blame
Live or die I'm worth the same
Oh hey hey baby call my name
I know you don't let yourself feel no pain
Track Name: I Do
I got a girl who lives far away
She holds me like a sunny day
When I'm grasping for a feeling
Oh lord well she brings me easy around to reason

And I'll wait months to see the light
It's a tunnel and I'm almost through
But I know she knows what I need to be strong and bold and true

Baby I ain't always smart
I know what I got in you
And if you don't know I love you by now
I do
I do
I do

I got a girl who don't want my name
And I know that may never change
But when I'm not home till early morning
Oh lord she brings me into bed without warning

And I'll wait months to see the light
It's a tunnel and I'm almost through
But I know she knows what I need to be strong and bold and true

Baby I ain't always smart
I know what I got in you
And if you don't know I love you by now
I do
I do
I do

I'll wait months to see the light
It's a tunnel and I'm almost through
But I know she knows what I need to be strong and bold and true

Baby I ain't always smart
I know what I got in you
And if you don't know I love you by now
I do
I do
I do

I do
I do
Oh if you don't know I love you now momma
I do
I do
I do
Track Name: We Never Knew Love
We walked on out the backdoor
Down the hill and out the gate
We never knew love before
But we sure will today
We never knew love before
But we sure will today

Oh little known about the way a young man feels he is of age
The wisdom of experience don't come around in one day
The wisdom of experience don't come around in one day

Lord my heart is crying joy
You got me feeling ten feet high
Oh I hope it never stops
But I dream about your love
Baby I dream about your love
Your love
Love
Love
Your love
Your love

Sweet baby I've been thinking about the way you look at me
I've been longing for you like a bird longs for a tree
I've been longing for you like a bird longs for a tree

Lord my heart is crying joy
You got me feeling ten feet high
Oh I hope it never stops
But I dream about your love
Baby I dream about your love
Your love
Love
Love
Your love
Your love

Lord my heart is crying joy
You got me feeling ten feet high
Oh I hope it never stops
But I dream about your love
Baby I dream about your love
Your love
Love
Love
Your love
Your love
Track Name: Drink Till We Dance
Ah
Ah ah ah
Ah ah ah ah
Ah ah ah

Oh well I've adored girls who want nothing of me
And lord I try to tell them
But they don't see
I've got nothing to give except the love in my heart
And a poor boy's love never goes very far

Ah
Ah ah ah
Ah ah ah ah
Ah ah ah

Oh well my bank holds less than the money I owe
But I keep myself on that narrow road
Man if I could afford it
I'd always play for free
The rich man and his cars ain't got nothing on me

Come on put me in a trance
Oh let's drink till we dance
I want a saltier taste of your sweet romance
We ain't nothing but bodies
All of heaven's in reach
Let's drink till we dance
I want you closer to me
Let's drink till we dance
Ain't gotta pay for a thing

Ah
Ah ah ah
Ah ah ah ah
Ah ah ah

Oh well when I was younger I said
Man I'm never slowing down
And soon enough my friends didn't want me around
Don't you know freedom is abrasive
To those who ain't free
And the curse of all your freedom is to be lonely

Come on put me in a trance
Oh let's drink till we dance
I want a saltier taste of your sweet romance
We ain't nothing but bodies
All of heaven's in reach
Let's drink till we dance
I want you closer to me
Let's drink till we dance
Ain't gotta pay for a thing

Ah ah ah
Ah ah ah ah
Ah ah ah

Oh put me in a trance
Oh let's drink till we dance
I want a saltier taste of your sweet romance
We ain't nothing but bodies
All of heaven's in reach
Let's drink till we dance
I want you closer to me
Let's drink till we dance
Ain't gotta pay for a thing

One
Two
Three

Momma put me in a trance
Oh let's drink till we dance
I want a saltier taste of your sweet romance
We ain't nothing but bodies
All of heaven's in reach
Let's drink till we dance
I want you closer to me
Let's drink till we dance
Ain't gotta pay for a thing

Track Name: Fear
Well I'm not the only one
Who takes the names of traitors
But I'll still sit on my own side
While the rest of the world floats away

Oh me oh my just how bad can it be
Isn't the poor man still eating for free
Why can't he stand on his own two feet
Try a little harder and then

You'll see it's all uphill
And it's not just the truth they kill
But lord when the T.V. is telling you
Take all these pills
You let yourself live in fear
If something ain't right
Cover your eyes and ears

Well people will keep bleeding money
Till the money satisfies the greed
Of all the banks that owned you from the start
Well all this ignorance creates a need

And oh me oh my all the dreams you'd become
Are ruined by the internet socialite scum
And don't give up yet
There's a war to be won
But we will all learn the hard way

We know it's all uphill
And it's not just the truth they kill
But lord when the T.V. is telling you
Take all these pills
You let yourself live in fear
If something ain't right
Cover your eyes and ears

Oh me oh my
Just what have we become
The sins of our fathers would blot out the sun
We're so slow to reason
So quick to the gun
And we'll curse our brothers again

We say it's all uphill
And it's not just the truth they kill
But lord when the T.V. is telling you
Take all these pills
You let yourself live in fear
If something ain't right
Cover your eyes and ears
Track Name: Get Along All Right (Acoustic)
I ain’t no seven eleven
I ain’t open all the time
I rather dislike situations when I can’t unwind
I love wine more than my lovers
But I don’t drink it every night
I still ain’t got no woman
So I get along all right

Go sacrifice your day
Forfeit tomorrow’s pay
Drink all of your money down
If it makes you feel good
There’s a time for heavy drinking
There’s a time for getting high
And when there’s work to be done
Baby I get to bed on time

I don’t wake up for roses
I don’t wake up for the news
I don’t wake up next to anyone
I don’t soberly choose
I’m up before the sunrise
I’ve got coffee on my breath
But if I could live without sleep
Then I would not ever rest

Go sacrifice your day
Forfeit tomorrow’s pay
Drink all of your money down
If it makes you feel good
There’s a time for heavy drinking
There’s a time for getting high
And when there’s work to be done
Baby I get to bed on time

Well all these working people tell you
That you’ve gotta choose
Between passion and a paycheck
Oh my friend you’re born to lose
I believe you can do anything
With time and elbow grease
Throw away your TVs
Moderate your drinks

Go sacrifice your day
Forfeit tomorrow’s pay
Drink all of your money down
If it makes you feel good
There’s a time for heavy drinking
There’s a time for getting high
And when there’s work to be done
Baby I get to bed on time

There's a time for heavy drinking
There's a time for getting high
And when there's work to be done
Baby I get to bed on time
Oh when there's work to be done
Baby I get to bed on time
Oh when there's work to be done
No I don't bitch or whine
When there's work to be done
Momma I get to bed on time
